Brothers Creek Crossover to Skyline - Feb 20, 2013

Over on the Vancouver Canyoning FB group, Jeff, Fix and I made plans to meet up on a Wednesday morning, and descend Brothers Creek, in West Vancouver.

The rain was coming down in parts of the Lower Mainland, but it was merely cloudy in some spots. When we met at Caffe Artigiano, at Park Royal, it was kind of drizzly out. After about an hour and a half of steeling up our nerve, we headed off to the top of British Properties, to start up. Up there, the rain was coming down as some light snow showers. We started up the trail...

We hiked our way up to the Crossover Creek trail, and suited up. There was about 30cm of snow on the bridge, where we dropped in.

After about 5 or 10 minutes, we reached the first obstacle - a downclimb beside a roaring cascade. Here's Jeff eyeing up the situation, and Fix making has way down.

Eight minutes further downcanyon, another downclimb beside a snow-covered log.

Continuing down the creek, then over a snowy log jam (there were a few of these...)

Finally, about an hour after starting down the creek, we reached the only rappel - about 10 or 12 meters, off a tree beside the waterfall. We rigged up a retrievable anchor, and headed down. A lovely rappel, with a great carved pothole alongside. This was the point at which we began to feel a little chilly - at least Jeff and I, who were in single wetsuits, around 4/3 in thickness. (I also had a 2mm vest with 5mm hood attached.) Fix was in two full wetsuits, and was a little warmer.

Just below the Skyline Trail bridge, there was a somewhat burly downclimb of a major logjam, into a nice chasm, followed quickly by a drop beside a big boulder. We handlined down this obstacle, and continued a short distance downstream. We were starting to feel a little chilly, however, and were getting close to private property, so decided to head up and left, back under the powerlines to the Skyline Trail. And so, back to the vehicles.

Our vehicles were covered in snow, and we quickly donned dry clothes, and headed off to the pub!
